Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis would’ve turned 91 years old just yesterday on July 28, 2020. The former First Lady of the United States was seen all across the world as a major American style icon and symbol of elegance and grace. Jackie generally tried to stay out of politics, although in 1963 she decided to tag along with her husband on a trip to Texas. It was on November 22 of this trip that her husband John F. Kennedy was shot and killed right by her side. The images of her in her pink Chanel suit and matching pillbox hat (pictured slide 5) in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination have become some of the most famous and iconic in all of American history. Following the shooting of President Kennedy, Jackie refused to change out of her blood covered suit in a statement to the murderers. She described it as a way to let them “see what they had done.” The photos projected her personal trauma as well as they brought about a powerful image of the strong woman to the public.

I love this uncropped version of a famous photo of Jacqueline Kennedy. It shows how very livable and unpretentious her private quarters in the White House were. There’s the TV for all to see, the pictures are slightly askew and the magazines clearly read. Even for someone with a keen sense of the importance of making the White House a stage for her husband’s presidency, there was no pretense. I couldn't let the day pass without noting the birthday of one who has been a source of interest inspiration for so many years. She was always at the very center of those early books and magazine articles that fired my interest in the White House. So influential was she that I remember buying a first edition of her White House Historic Guide at a flea market when I was about nine or ten and trying to get our landlord to invest in "restoring" our c. 1970s duplex! It was through books like J.B. West's "Upstairs at The White House", Carl Anthony's "First Ladies" and "As We Remember Her" and Marta Sgubin's "Cooking for Madam" that I developed an appreciation of her as the complex and intriguing person that she was. It's also no exaggeration to say that, without Jackie Kennedy, I might still be stuck selling insurance! It was my drawings of her clothes that launched my artistic career, and it's through getting to work with the White House Historical Association (an organization that she founded) that it continues to grow and expand. While today would have been her 91st birthday, and although we’ve had an unremitting barrage of Jackie-related information directed at us for over sixty years, she remains slightly elusive. Somehow she managed to retain a little piece of herself that was entirely hidden. And therein lies the secret to our continuing fascination.
