Прежде чем выпустить свою первую книгу A Hundred Summers A Hundred Winters, Бертин ван Манен проехала по всей территории бывшего СССР и фотографировала повседневную жизнь людей более трех лет. «Путешествовать в то время с дорогими Leica и Nikon было небезопасно, — рассказывает она. — Они считали мои камеры игрушками… и не боялись их, считали меня туристкой или подругой, которая просто любила фотографировать».
То, что на первый взгляд может показаться грубыми ошибками и недостатком качества в снимках (засвеченные края, неточная фокусировка или засветка от вспышки), на самом деле дает представление о желании Манен схватить момент, запечатлеть, не упустить то, что происходит перед ней.
